The Mastermind Alliance - Becoming
Chapter 1
My sixteenth birthday came and went like every other day at the foster home—uneventful and unnoticed. I didn’t expect much. Most of the kids here didn’t even know my name. But that night, something changed. Something that would unravel everything I thought I knew.
It started with a box. When I returned from school, a small, rectangular package sat outside my door. There was no note, no label—just a dull metal key lying inside. I picked it up carefully, holding it under the dim bulb of my room, and noticed an odd shimmer dancing across its surface. The metal almost seemed to pulse as if it had a life of its own. Tiny strands of code flickered under the surface.
For a moment, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me—until a faint blue line emerged along the key’s edge, glowing softly like some encrypted message waiting to be unlocked.
Before I could react, a holographic image blinked into existence, hovering midair like a glitchy projection. It glowed faintly, pixelated for a second, then sharpened into the face of a man I’d only seen in old photos.
“Alex,” the figure said, his voice crackling with static like a distant radio transmission. I nearly dropped the key. He looked exactly like the photos—white hair, deep wrinkles, and sharp, focused eyes that seemed to see right through me.
“Grandpa?” I whispered though I wasn’t entirely sure if it was him or something else.
“If you’re seeing this,” he said, his voice low but urgent, “it means I’m no longer around to help you. I’m your grandfather, William Mercer, and you must listen carefully.”
My breath caught. I’d never met my grandfather in person—he’d been a mystery, a name that rarely came up even when my dad talked about his past. But now, here he was, speaking to me from… somewhere. And it didn’t feel like this was just a message—it felt like he was speaking to me directly.
“There’s something you need to know about your father,” William continued. The edges of his image sparked slightly. “Something about who he was.”
The hologram glitched, then re-formed into a strange, complex symbol: an emblem of interlocking shapes with the letters “M.A.” etched beneath it. I didn’t know what it meant, but the following words sent a chill down my spine.
“Your father was involved with a group known as the Mastermind Alliance. A global network is powerful and dangerous. They took him, Alex. They took him because he knew too much. And now… I’m afraid they’re watching you too.”
My heart pounded in my chest. The Alliance. Watching me? What did that even mean? Sure, my father had been a brilliant military strategist, but he was just a man. Not someone tangled in some global conspiracy—right?
William leaned forward, his gaze sharpening. “I embedded everything I could into this key. But it’s not just a simple device. It’s DNA-locked and programmed to respond only to you. No one else can access what’s inside. Not even me.”
“DNA-locked?” I whispered, my mind struggling to keep up. I turned the key over in my hands, realizing that this wasn’t just a tool—it was part of my family’s legacy.
“Exactly,” William confirmed, his tone softening for a moment. “Your father made sure no one, but you could access it. And inside is everything you’ll need to uncover the truth.”
The hologram flashed, and the figure standing before me shifted, becoming even more lifelike. He looked me directly in the eye, his expression somewhere between kindness and urgency.
“Call me William,” he said gently. “Or Bill, if that’s easier.” He gave me a small, almost teasing smile. “I’m your guide now, kid. Your dad made sure of that.”
I stared at him, stunned. This wasn’t just some prerecorded message. William—Bill—was a fully functioning AI, programmed with my grandfather’s personality and memories.
“Think of me as more than just software,” William added. “Your dad didn’t just design me to spit out instructions. I’m here to help you navigate what’s coming—and believe me, kid, you’ll need it.”
I shook my head, trying to make sense of it all. “But… why now? Why would my father leave this for me?” The mystery of my father’s actions and the sudden revelation of a dangerous organization left me bewildered, my mind racing with questions.
William’s expression grew serious. “Because he knew they’d come for you next.” He shifted slightly as if weighing his words carefully. “The Mastermind Alliance isn’t just dangerous. They control things most people can’t even imagine, hacking networks, influencing governments, pulling strings on a global scale.”
The image flickered again, showing encrypted blueprints, hidden data clusters, and bits of code swirling across the hologram. “Your dad was working to expose them from the inside,” William explained. “He was the best—he was better than any of them. And when they realized what he was doing…”
“They took him,” I finished quietly, a knot tightening in my stomach. The reality of my father’s abduction by a powerful organization was almost too much to bear.
William nodded grimly. “He left this key as your way in. But it won’t be easy, Alex. They’ll be looking for you now.”
My breath hitched. “Why me? I’m just a kid. Why would they care about me?” The fear of being targeted by a dangerous organization was palpable in my voice.
William’s expression softened. “Because you’re smarter than you think. And you have something they’re afraid of.”
“What’s that?” I whispered.
He gave me a knowing smile. “The potential to finish what your father started.”
I gripped the key tighter. A part of me wanted to shut it off, to pretend this was all some elaborate trick. But deep down, I knew it wasn’t. I remembered the way my dad used to guide me through computer systems—teaching me how to bypass security protocols and decode encrypted files. It had always felt like a game back then, but now I realized it was something more. He’d been preparing me.
“So what do I do now?” I asked, my voice trembling but steadier than before.
William’s eyes brightened slightly. “First, we need information. There’s a high-tech data center, one of the Alliance’s fronts, not far from here. Inside is a data chip that holds the final project your father was working on before he disappeared.”
He paused for a moment, his gaze steady. “If we can get our hands on it, we’ll have the first piece of the puzzle.”
A chill ran down my spine. Break into a secure data center? This was way beyond anything I’d done before—far beyond the harmless pranks and backdoor hacks I used to play around with. This was real. And dangerous.
William seemed to sense my hesitation. “You’ve got this, Alex,” he said softly. “Your father believed in you—and so do I.”
Something stirred in me at those words. This was bigger than fear. It was about answers. About finding out the truth—and maybe bringing my father back.
I took a deep breath and straightened my shoulders. “Okay. Let’s do this.”
William grinned. “That’s the spirit, kid.”
